Pound of Flesh is one of Jigsaw's games in the Saw franchise, occurring in Saw VI.

Design and Function

This game took place in a room which was divided in two segments by two metal grates in the middle of the room. Between these grates was a large scale. On each side of the room was a table with a knife and a meat cleaver attached to it by a chain and a tube lying on it. Each of the two victims had a mechanic device on their heads with screws pointing at their temples. Once the game began, the victims had 60 seconds to use the cutting tools provided for them to cut off their own flesh and throw it on the scale. Whoever managed to sacrifice more flesh would survive while the other one would be killed by the mechanic device as the screws would then pierce the person's skull. (Saw VI)

Eddie and Simone's Test

Hello. I want to play a game. The devices on your heads are symbolic of the shackles you place upon others. You recklessly loan people money, knowing their financial limitations, counting on repossessing more than they could ever pay back. You are predators. But today you become the prey and it is your own pound of flesh that I demand. The scale before you is your only path to freedom. However, only one of you may pass and the toll is the ultimate sacrifice. The sacrifice of flesh. Before you are the instruments to exact this flesh. Move with haste now, for when the 60 second timer hits zero, the one who has given the most flesh will release their bindings, while the gears on your opponent's head will engage, piercing their skull. Who will offer the most flesh in order to save their life? The choice is yours.

Eddie in the trap

The victims of this trap were Simone and Eddie, two money lenders who plunged multiple people into debt by giving them large amounts of credit, knowing that these people couldn't pay them back. Therefore, they were eventually abducted by Detective Mark Hoffman, the accomplice and eventual successor of the late John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw Killer. Shortly after their abduction, Simone woke up in the room. While she was initially confused, she quickly realized the danger she was in and started to panic. When she jumped off the chair, a metal pin was pulled out of the contraption on her head. Afraid by the situation, she screamed for help but stopped when she saw someone else on the other side of the room, which was divided in two sections by two metal grates. Moments later, she realized that it was her partner, Eddie. When he woke up, he was just as confused as her. Simone tried to calm him down and told him not to move. However, Eddie didn't listen to her and stood up, causing his metal pin to be pulled out as well. Thereby, a TV turned on and a mechanical ventriloquist puppet appeared on the screen. The puppet introduced them to their deadly game and told them that they had been chosen for their reckless work which had ruined the lives of many people. Therefore, Eddie angrily yelled at her that their imprisonment was her fault. The puppet informed them that once the game began, they had 60 seconds to cut off their own flesh and toss it on the large scale in the middle of the room. To enable them to do so, each of them was provided with a knife and a meat cleaver chained to wooden tables. Whoever managed to sacrifice the most flesh would survive while the other one would be killed by the metal device. Simone tried to use the cleaver to destroy the chains which connected the cutting tools to the tables. However, this attempt remained unsuccessful. Moments later, the TV turned off and the game began.

Simone tries to cut off her arm

At the same moment as the timer started to count down, the contraptions on Simone and Eddie's heads started to drill the screws into their heads. When they stopped after a few seconds, Eddie, being overweight, ripped his shirt and used his knife to cut off the flesh from his own stomach. Shocked by this, Simone ripped her shirt as well but realized that she was too slim to do the same as Eddie. Therefore, she grabbed a tube and used it as a tourniquet to constrict her left arm. Then she took the knife and attempted to cut off her own fingers. However, she couldn't bring herself to do it. Therefore, she tried it otherwise and eventually began to slowly cut her arm while screaming in agony. Meanwhile, Eddie had cut off the first piece of flesh from his stomach and threw it on the scale. Simone then began to cut even faster. However, while she only made little progress, Eddie managed to cut off a second piece of flesh, causing her to further panic. Therefore, she applied the knife higher on her arm and continued to cut.

Simone, after cutting her own arm off

In the meantime, the contraptions were briefly activated once again and pierced their temples even further. As she saw that Eddie was about to cut off another piece of flesh and the timer went off, she made a desperate decision, grabbed the meat cleaver and repeatedly smashed her own arm until she finally managed to cut it off. Shocked by what she had just done, she took her severed arm and threw it on the scale, thereby tipping the scale in her favor. Seconds later, Eddie was killed by the metal contraption, while Simone collapsed and screamed in horror. (Saw VI)

Hoffman places Strahm's fingerprints on the scale

After Simone managed to calm down again, she tried to flee in an attempt to get help. When he was alone, Hoffman entered the room, used the severed hand of Special Agent Peter Strahm to place the latter's fingerprints on the scale and Eddie's eyelids. Then, he cut a jigsaw piece from Eddie's skin. Finally, he removed Simone and Eddie's instruction tape from the TV in the middle of the room. When he was done, he left the location. and went to a surveillance room at the abandoned Rowan Zoological Institute. There, he listened to a voice recording of Simone and Eddie's game, but was interrupted when he was called back to the crime scene, which had been found by the police by then.

Erickson shows the fingerprints to Hoffman

Shortly afterwards, he returned to the crime scene after he was called by his colleagues, who had found the location. Upon his arrival, a female officer informed him that the FBI was now in charge of the investigation and had asked for Hoffman to come to the crime scene as soon as possible. When he entered the room, he was surprised to see Agent Strahm's supervisor, Special Agent Dan Erickson. Erickson told him about the fingerprints and showed them to him with a black light. Furthermore, he informed him that the fingerprints had already been identified as those of Peter Strahm, while voicing his surprise and dismay of this new situation. After the examination, Eddie's body was taken to the morgue for his autopsy by Dr. Adam Heffner while the scale, the cutting tools and the screw helmets were taken to the evidence room. (Saw VI 3D)

  • The term "Pound of Flesh" is a reference to William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. In the play, Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, lends money to his Christian rival, Antonio, setting the security at a pound of Antonio's flesh from next to his heart. When a bankrupt Antonio defaults on the loan, Shylock demands the pound of flesh.
