|“||I mean, consider Paul, a bore for sure, but he had it all - wife, kids, the works.||”|
— John Kramer talks about Paul[src]
Paul was a toy maker who worked in a factory. He had a wife and at least two children. One day, however, he almost died when he attempted to commit suicide by cutting his wrists. After that incident, he was taken to a hospital. During his stay in the clinic, he was observed by another patient named John Kramer, who was, in fact, one of his colleagues at the toy factory and had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor recently. Therefore, he was furious as Paul had tried to kill himself while John was about to lose his life without having a choice.
Eventually, John decided to spend the last remaining time of his life on testing other people's will to live, hoping that this would convince them to value their lives and the lives of those around them. He selected his fellow patients to become his first test subjects and began observing his future victims, including Paul. (Saw: Rebirth)
Not much can be said about Paul's personality due to his short screen time. However, his suicide attempt indicated that he suffered from severe depression.
