Kevin Greutert (born March 31, 1965) is an American film editor, director, and producer best known for his work on the Saw franchise and other horror movies.
He was the editor of Saw, Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, and Jigsaw, the director of Saw VI, Saw 3D, Saw X, and Saw XI, and an executive producer of Spiral.
Career[]
Kevin Greutert was born in Pasadena, California. He edited Room 6 and Journey to the End of the Night in 2006 and The Strangers in 2008. He also edited the first five entries in the Saw series. In 2009, he made his feature directorial debut with Saw VI, released on October 23, 2009.
In 2010, Greutert was signed on to direct Paranormal Activity 2, but he was forced off the project and onto Saw 3D after Twisted Pictures exercised a "contractual clause" in his contract. Tod Williams replaced him as director for Paranormal Activity 2, while Greutert directed Saw 3D, which was initially planned to be the last entry in the series. Eventually, the film was released on October 29, 2010.
Greutert has also published fiction in magazines such as Ambit and Magic Realism and performed music on several film scores, including the Paul Bowles documentary Things Gone and Things Still Here. Later, he directed the horror film Jessabelle for producer Jason Blum and Lionsgate, released on November 7, 2014. In 2016, he released the horror film Visions, starring Isla Fisher, Anson Mount, Gilliam Jacobs, Jim Parsons, and Eva Longoria.
In 2017, Greutert worked on Jackals, a thriller starring Stephen Dorff, Johnathon Schaech, and Deborah Kara Unger. The same year, he returned to the Saw franchise as the editor of Jigsaw, the eighth film in the series.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Greutert was not expected to return to the Saw franchise for its ninth entry, Spiral, in 2021. Therefore, this would have been the first time he was not involved in a Saw film since the franchise began in 2004. However, he was brought on late in production to help edit the final product and was credited as an executive producer.
In August 2022, Bloody Disgusting reported that Greutert would return to direct the tenth film in the Saw series, set for release on October 27, 2023. Similarly, in February 2024, Greutert was confirmed to return for the eleventh Saw, set for release on September 26, 2025.
