— John looks back on his life.[src]
He was voiced by George Williams.
John Kramer was a toymaker who worked as a designer in a factory. He was married to a woman named Jill Tuck. However, John was a relatively inert individual, and his lack of ambitions ultimately caused Jill to leave him. (Saw: Rebirth)
John continued his life as usual for the following years until his physical condition worsened. When he went to the hospital, the oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon diagnosed him with a malign tumor. Although it was not far advanced, John suffered from a particularly virulent strain of cancer. When telling him about his diagnosis, Gordon clarified that he was not expecting his patient to survive. After John received his terminal diagnosis, Zep Hindle, an orderly, talked to him and openly displayed his aversion to the doctors' indifferent attitude towards their patients. He claimed they were all cheating on their wives, and he would not be like them once he was a doctor himself.
During his hospital stay, John began focusing on other people’s lives. While wandering around, he came across a scam artist who talked to the other patients, possibly attempting to defraud them. Another patient he met was Amanda Young, who was addicted to heroin and almost died of an overdose. However, none of these events shocked him as much as seeing Paul, one of his colleagues from the toy factory, who had unsuccessfully tried to kill himself by cutting his wrists. (Saw: Rebirth)
Thoroughly depressed, John ultimately tried to end his life by driving his car off a cliff. Contrary to his expectations, he survived the crash. At this moment, John decided he wanted to live. Severely injured, he crawled out of the wreck and realized that he had only learned to cherish his life when his death had been imminent. Because of this, John chose to spend the remaining time of his life testing other people's will to live, hoping that this would convince them to value their lives and the lives of those around them. He selected his fellow patients to become his first test subjects and observed his future victims, including Amanda, Paul, and a young man named Mark, whom John suspected of merely pretending to be sick. To put his plan into action, John neglected his own needs and instead educated himself in diverse fields and gained vast esoteric knowledge until he was ready to start his mission. (Saw: Rebirth)
John Kramer was an inert individual who used to live a monotonous life and barely had any ambitions. Although he knew that there were countless opportunities to make more of his life, he was too lazy to change anything. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with incurable cancer. John suffered from severe depression and eventually tried to commit suicide. Just as this attempt failed, John realized he wanted to live and spent the remaining time of his life testing other peoples’ will to live to convince them to value their lives and the lives of those around them. Therefore, John became the Jigsaw Killer and began testing other people’s will to survive by putting them in gruesome, potentially deadly situations. Due to his self-imposed mission, John turned into a diligent man who gained an excellent understanding of facts in diverse fields of science and esotericism.
