Biography[]
Early Life[]
John Kramer was a toymaker who worked as a designer in the toy division of Standard Engineering Ltd. He was in a relationship with a woman named Jill Tuck, which lasted for several months. Jill even temporarily moved into his apartment with him. However, John's introverted personality and lack of ambitions ultimately caused Jill to leave him. (Saw: Rebirth)
Terminal Diagnosis[]
John checks into the hospital.
John continued his life as usual for the following years until his physical condition worsened. When he went to a hospital, the oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon diagnosed him with a malignant tumor. Although it was not far advanced, John suffered from a particularly virulent strain of cancer. When telling him about his diagnosis, Gordon clarified that he was not expecting his patient to survive. After John received his terminal diagnosis, Zep Hindle, an orderly, talked to him and openly showed his disdain for the doctors' indifferent attitude toward their patients. He claimed they were all cheating on their wives and that he would not be like them once he became a doctor.
John leaves the hospital.
During his hospital stay, John began focusing on other people’s lives. While wandering around, he encountered a scam artist named Mark, who talked to the other patients, possibly attempting to defraud them. Another patient he met was Amanda Young, a heroin addict who almost died of an overdose. However, none of these events shocked him as much as seeing Paul, one of his colleagues from the toy factory, who had unsuccessfully tried to kill himself by cutting his wrists. Although the doctors urgently appealed to him to stay at the hospital for an undetermined time, John interrupted his treatment and returned home. (Saw: Rebirth)
Becoming Jigsaw[]
John prepares himself for his mission.
Thoroughly depressed, John ultimately tried to end his life by driving his car off a cliff. Contrary to his expectations, he survived the crash. Severely injured, he crawled out of the wreck and realized that he had only learned to cherish his life when his death was imminent. Because of this, John chose to spend the remaining time of his life testing other people's will to live, hoping that this would convince them to value their lives and the lives of those around them. He selected his fellow patients to become his first test subjects and observed his future victims, including Amanda, Paul, and Mark. To put his plan into action, John neglected his own needs. Instead, he educated himself in diverse fields and gained vast esoteric knowledge until he was ready to start his mission. (Saw: Rebirth)
Personality[]
John Kramer was an inert individual who used to live a monotonous life and barely had any ambitions. Although he had countless opportunities to make more of himself, he was too lazy to change anything. Despite lacking life goals, John was good at his job and enjoyed working at the toy factory.
His interactions with Jill Tuck showed that he genuinely loved her. Therefore, he emotionally suffered when the latter parted with him and subsequently lost most of his enjoyment of life. Nonetheless, the breakup did not convince John to change his ways.
However, his life dramatically changed when he was diagnosed with incurable cancer. John suffered from severe depression and eventually tried to commit suicide. Just as this attempt failed, John realized he wanted to live. From then on, he spent the remaining time of his life testing other people's will to live. Due to his self-imposed mission, John became a diligent man who gained an excellent understanding of facts in diverse fields of science and esotericism.
