The Horsepower Trap is a trap from the Saw franchise, appearing in Saw 3D.

Design and Function[]

This trap was located inside a garage at Pete's Auto Body, a junkyard at 58th Street. In the center of the room was a 1976 Chevrolet El Camino, which was held up by several jacks. The doors, as well as the hood had been removed and the steering wheel was secured and held in position by chains. The primary victim of this trap sat on the driver's seat with their naked back glued to the seat. Once the game began, the person had 30 seconds to tear themselves away from the seat and pull a red lever attached to the motor. During the entire game, the car was constantly sped up. If the test subject didn't manage to pull the lever in time, the jacks holding up the car would fall, resulting in a deadly chain of events. A second victim was strapped to a large metal plate by barbed wire. This person's head lay directly underneath the right rear tire of the car and would be crushed once the car fell. A third test person was chained to a metal post behind the car. This victim's arms and lower jaw were pierced by large metal rings. Attached to these rings were chains, which were also attached to the back of the car. Once it fell from the jacks, the car would start to move forward with high speed, thereby ripping off the third victim's arms and jaw. The fourth and last victim of the trap was chained to the garage door directly in front of the car and would be overrun once it started to drive and burst through the door. Finally, the trap would end with the first victim being thrown out of the windshield of the car. (Saw 3D)

History[]

Evan's Test[]

Hello, Evan. I want to play a game. The situation you find yourself in is of your own doing. You, your girlfriend and your friends are all racists. You have intimidated others based on their physical differences, but today it is you who will run scared. Your pathetic friends follow your every word, Evan. Therefore, you will be the only one capable of saving them and yourself. In thirty seconds, the jacks holding up this car will fall, setting off a deadly chain of events. In order to stop this from happening, you must tear yourself away from the seat to which you are glued. Then you must pull the red lever before you. But no act comes without a sacrifice. You've judged others by the color of their skin and today, Evan, you will learn that we are all the same color on the inside. Live or die, Evan. The choice is yours.

Evan in the trap

The people tested in this trap were Evan, Kara, Dan and Jake, four racist skinheads, who intimidated and harmed other people because of their physical differences. One day, they were all abducted by Detective Mark Hoffman, successor of the late John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw Killer. After subduing them, he took all of them to the junkyard, where he placed them in the trap. When Evan woke up shortly afterwards, he immediately panicked as his back was glued to the driver's seat of the car. An audio tape told him that he and his friends were chosen for a deadly game due to their racism. As Evan was the leader of the group, he was the only one able to save them. The tape further informed him that he had 30 seconds to tear himself away from the seat and pull a red lever in front of him in order to stop the car from speeding up and starting a deadly chain reaction which would kill him and his friends.

When the tape ended, the timer began to count down and the car, while still being in its jacked up position, started to speed up. Incited by his fear and the frantic screams of his friends, Evan tried to get away from his seat. Despite the great amount of pain, he was able to rip off most of the skin from his back. However, he ultimately failed as the timer went off before he could free himself. This caused the jacks holding up the car to fall and Kara, who was tied up under the car, was crushed to death by the rear tire.

When the car started to drive off, Dan's arms and his lower jaw, which were pierced by chains connected to the back of the car, were ripped from his body. The car then crushed through the garage door, killing Jake, who was chained to the door. Despite his desperate efforts to gain control over the car, Evan ultimately crashed head on into another car in the junkyard, which caused him to be ejected out of his car and thrown right into the other car's back window. Aftermath[]

Gibson , Coroner & Corpse

Gibson talks to the coroner

Shortly afterwards, the Metropolitan Police Department was informed about a car accident at the junkyard. However, when Officer Rogers, who worked for the Internal Affairs Division, arrived at the scene, he quickly realized that the supposed accident was actually another Jigsaw trap. Therefore, he called his partner, Officer Matt Gibson, who arrived shortly afterwards. Upon his arrival, he immediately listened to the audio tape, which had contained the instructions for Evan. The tape however was severely damaged. Therefore, Gibson gave it to one of the forensics for further examination. Furthermore, he ordered a coroner to take all of the corpses to the morgue as they had to be abducted immediately. The coroner followed Gibson's orders and took the corpses to the morgue for their autopsy by Dr. Adam Heffner. Later on, the individual parts of the trap were taken to the evidence room. (Saw 3D)

Trivia[]

  • Originally, Evan was planned to survive. However, this was changed due to his actor, Chester Bennington, being on a tight schedule, which prevented him from filming the scene of Evan being taken to the hospital.
  • The creators of Saw 3D had already wanted to use the trap in one of the earlier movies, but didn't do so because it was deemed too brutal.
  • Even if Evan had succeeded, however, it is plausible that the red lever would not have done anything. Because Hoffman needed to use one of the body bags to infiltrate the police station to get revenge on Jill Tuck before going into hiding, the Horsepower Trap was likely one of Hoffman's many inescapable traps.
