Your son was named after John's first building, right?
— Strahm finds out about Jigsaw's hideout.[src]

The Gideon Meatpacking Plant is a fictional location from the Saw franchise as well as one of the main locations of Saw III and IV.

Layout and Structure[]

The Gideon Meatpacking Plant was a large factory building, specialized on producing and processing meat. The meat processing was conducted in a large chamber. Therefore, the dead animals were skewered by large meat hooks and were hanging from a conveyor-like bar at the ceiling. In the room, there was a giant blender with several interlocking saws. When the animals were carried into the room via the conveyor, they were dropped above the blades which chopped them in a matter of seconds. After that, the chopped meat was filled into a large cylindrical vat which was connected with the blender by a chute. To observe the processing, a catwalk was positioned above the vat and could be accessed by a metal stairway.

Despite the production chambers, the Gideon Plant housed a number of rooms for the proper storage, if necessary for a longer duration. To keep the meat fresh before and after the processing, it was stored in the multiple freezer rooms in the building. Once it was ready for transport and sale, it was packed into large wooden crates and kept in a storage hall near the buildings delivery entrance.

John's new workshop

When John Kramer, better known as the Jigsaw Killer, and his apprentice, Amanda Young, used the plant as their hideout, they made a number of changes and additions to the furnishing of some of the various rooms. Most importantly, they repurposed the function of one of the bigger halls and used it as their surveillance room, bedroom and workshop where they designed and built their vicious traps, some of which were set up in different rooms all around the plant. Additionally, John Kramer's makeshift bedroom housed the entrance to a secret hallway, which could be accessed through a hidden door, that at first glance wasn't distinguishable from the rest of the walls. This hallway led to a room which housed another deadly trap, the Water Cube. (Saw III, IV, V)

History[]

Four Walls Build a Home[]

Gideon paper

An article about the Urban Renewal Group

At the beginning of his career, the Gideon Meatpacking Plant was the very first building designed by civil engineer John Kramer. John and his friend and lawyer, Art Blank, were the founders of the Urban Renewal Group, a foundation dedicated to property development for needy people under the motto "Four walls build a home." Due to unknown reasons, the meat production at the plant was eventually stopped and the plant itself was abandoned, most likely when John Kramer left the group and allotted his shares to his ex-wife, Jill Tuck, after the loss of their unborn child, who was going to be called Gideon. (Saw III, IV)

Jigsaw's Hideout[]

However, a few years later John returned to the plant and used it as his hideout after he had become the serial killer known as Jigsaw and his identity, as well as the identity of his apprentice, Amanda Young, became known to the public. As he was already severely weakened and bedridden due to his brain tumor, John soon started to plan and prepare his final games, which were all in some way connected to the building. As he wanted to personally play these games before his inevitable death, he began his preparations soon after establishing his hideout. (Saw III)

These games primarily focused on four test subjects. The first one was Jeff Denlon, a depressive father who had become obsessed with revenge after the death of his 8-year-old son, Dylan, in a car accident. The second subject was Officer Daniel Rigg, a colleague of John's other apprentice, Detective Mark Hoffman, who had developed an obsession with saving everyone around him after his colleague, Detective Eric Matthews, had been abducted by Jigsaw. The last test subjects on John's list were the special agents Peter Strahm and Lindsey Perez. Additionally, John's third apprentice, his oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon, suggested the surgeon Dr. Lynn Denlon to him as another test subject. Therefore, he needed all help he could get from his accomplices. (Saw III, IV, 3D)

Final Preparations[]

Hoffman Rack

Hoffman sets up the Rack

John and his apprentices took up their work and crafted and set up multiple traps all around the building, and finished it six months after John had went into hiding. However, during this time he had gained knowledge of the fact that Amanda had started to doubt his methods and had therefore manipulated her own traps, thereby giving her test subjects no chance to survive. Therefore, he planned to test as well without her knowledge. At the day of the games, Amanda went through the plant to bring John, who sat in a wheelchair at that point due to his disease, back to his bedroom. While doing so, they came across Detective Hoffman, who transported the unconscious body of another test subject, Timothy Young, in a wheelbarrow and took him to his respective trap simply called "The Rack" by John, which resembled a large mechanic crucifix. Timothy was the drunk driver who had killed Jeff Denlon's son three years earlier. When John saw that Hoffman switched the trap's gear ratio, he told him that he'd have to change the gear grease to match the increased friction and berated him for making these changes without asking him first, stating that he would do so next time. When Hoffman asked him how many next times there were going to be, John merely answered that their work would go on as long as necessary. Hoffman then recklessly dumped Timothy out of the wheelbarrow and was therefore berated by John for his brutal behavior, who reminded him that Timothy was still a human being after all. When he asked Hoffman if he liked this kind of brutality, Hoffman responded that John wanted to see Timothy suffer just as much as he did. This resulted in a short argument between Hoffman and Amanda who asked him when he was going to get tested on his own. Hoffman responded that this was unnecessary as he claimed he had always appreciated his life unlike her and showed her the scars she had inflicted on herself.

Amanda mocks Hoffman

Amanda mocked him, telling him he should get used to her as he wouldn't get rid of her anymore to which he responded that she shouldn't be so sure about it. When John interrupted them by saying it was time to go on, Amanda took him to his room and left Hoffman alone. As he was finally done with his work on the trap, he took Timothy's sweater off of him, placed him in the trap and hung a tape recorder, which contained the instructions for Jeff, around his neck. Then, he set up a long glass box which contained a shotgun, which aimed at whoever stood in front of it, and connected the key to Timothy's trap to a mechanism which would pull the shotgun's trigger once the key was removed. After finishing his preparations at the Gideon Plant, Hoffman left the building to go after Jeff Denlon. (Saw III, VI)

Meanwhile, John and Amanda came across his ex-wife, Jill, who had come to the plant to speak with John. John then sent Amanda to go after Lynn Denlon and bring her to the plant. When she disappeared to carry out his orders, Jill begged John to stop with his games. However, John promised her that he had already provided a way out for her and gave her a key for a black box he once gave to his executor. When she asked him what it was for, he merely told her that she'd know it once the time had come. This was the last time John met with her during his waking life. After he was alone, he went through the building and put the last requisites for Jeff Denlon in place, before finally returning to his room and waiting for Amanda to arrive with Lynn so his last game could finally begin. She returned to the plant shortly afterwards after she had abducted Lynn from the Angel of Mercy Hospital, and strapped her to a wheelchair while she was still unconscious, before leaving again to go on some final errands for John. (Saw V, VI)

Hoffman Teddy 2

Hoffman at the Gideon Plant

Upon his return to the plant with the unconscious bodies of Jeff and his daughter, Corbett Denlon, Mark Hoffman went to the big hall in the building which served as John and Amanda's work shop as well as their sleeping quarters. Knowing that he didn't have much time until Amanda returned, he quickly wrote a letter for her and placed it in the drawer of her desk. This letter was actually a blackmailing message. By unknown means, Hoffman had found out that she and her former boyfriend, Cecil Adams, were responsible for a robbery on Jill Tuck's recovery clinic during which the latter lost her and John's unborn son, Gideon, and threatened her to tell John the truth. To prevent him from doing so, she had to kill Lynn Denlon. Unlike Amanda, Hoffman knew that Lynn and Jeff Denlon were husband and wife and therefore anticipated that Jeff would kill Amanda if she killed Lynn. After writing the letter, Hoffman took a pig mask with him went to John's makeshift bedroom next door. John ordered him to prepare another series of tests and therefore handed him a file which contained the photos of five new test subjects: Ashley Kazon, Charles Salomon, Luba Gibbs, Mallick Scott and Brit Stevenson. Furthermore he told them that all of them were somehow connected to each other. Meanwhile, Amanda returned and turned on the surveillance monitors and the light, thereby waking up the still unconscious Lynn Denlon, who immediately panicked. Therefore, Amanda calmly approached her and told her to be quiet. When John and Hoffman heard Lynn Denlon screaming for help, Hoffman told him that Amanda would fail him. After their final conversation, Hoffman left the room through a hidden door. (Saw III, IV, V, VI)

Amanda takes Lynn to John

Seconds later, Amanda brought Lynn to the room where John already anticipated their arrival. When the women entered the room, John greeted his new test subject and former doctor, even though she couldn't remember him being one of her former patients and only recognized him from the news stories. After a brief introduction, John told her that he had chosen her for a dangerous test due to her depression after her son's death and explained her the rules for her game. Amanda put a collar on her which was connected to John's heart rate monitor and would explode if John died or she moved out of his range. It was her task to keep John alive until another victim managed to finish a series of tests. However he refused to tell her and Amanda that the victim was actually Lynn's husband, Jeff. If she was able to accomplish her task, Amanda told her to let her go after her test and then freed her from her restraints. (Saw III)

Meanwhile, Hoffman locked Corbett Denlon up in a room at the plant along with her cuddly toy and trapped Jeff inside a large wooden crate located in the storage area near the building's delivery entrance. Then, he left the plant once again and went to an underground tunnel network, where Detective Eric Matthews had been imprisoned in a cell for the last six months since his abduction. Hoffman sedated him and took his unconscious body back to the Gideon Plant. Upon their arrival, Hoffman placed him in a trap. Eric had to stand on a large, melting ice block placed at one end of a big seesaw-like scale and had a chain noose around his neck which was suspended from the ceiling. Afterwards, Hoffman hit himself in the face in order to make himself look like just another victim and then tied himself to a chair next to Eric at the other end of the large scale, therefore taking on his role in the game focusing on Officer Rigg. From this moment on, three of John's biggest games so far took place at the plant at the same time. (Saw III, IV)

Jeff Denlon's Trial[]

JeffAwakingII

Jeff receives his instructions

When Jeff Denlon woke up in the wooden crate in which he had been trapped by Hoffman, he immediately panicked and screamed for help. However, he managed to calm down when he found a tape recorder in the corner of the box. The tape told him that he had been chosen for one of Jigsaw's games due to his vengefulness. In order to escape the building, Jeff would have to face a series of tests in order to learn to finally forgive the people he deemed responsible for his own fate and the fate of his son. Thereby, Jigsaw promised him that he would finally be able to confront the murderer of his son. However, if he refused to play his game, Jigsaw told him that the doors would lock after two hours and he would die in this place.

Jeff escapes from the crate

After listening to the tape, Jeff angrily thrashed around to get out of the crate, which ultimately fell over. As it had been lifted up by a pallet transporter, Jeff fell several feet until the crate broke upon hitting the ground. Dazed by the impact, Jeff hallucinated and briefly remembered the final moments before his abduction. However, eventually came to his senses and braced up. Still confused by the situation, he armed himself with a wooden slat and yelled through the hallways if someone was there. After a few steps, he saw a security camera and wielded the slat before it. However, when there was no reaction, he noticed a small box standing on a barrel. In the box, there was key as well as a message which said: "Open the door, Jeff". Additionally, there was a snippet of a photo, showing himself during the time where his son was still alive and they still were a happy family. After picking everything up, Jeff went on and began to explore the building. (Saw III)

Jeff Denlon's First Test[]

Jeff finds his first test

After a while, Jeff entered a long hallway, which was barely illuminated by the flickering ceiling lighting. As he carefully went on, he ultimately came across a door which had the words "Face you fears" written on it in big red letters. Despite his initial hesitation, Jeff eventually opened the door, causing a cold air draft blew towards him. As he entered the freezer room, he saw a dark human silhouette before him. However, when he further approached it, the door behind him suddenly slammed shut. Frightened witless, Jeff tried to open it again but stopped when the lights turned on and enabled him to see the woman who was entirely naked and chained by her arms to the ceiling in the center of the room. As he came closer, the woman suddenly moved, causing Jeff to realize that she was still alive. The woman, who was immediately scared by the situation and initially thought that Jeff had done this to her, talked to him and begged him to help her, as she was freezing and already couldn't feel her arms anymore. Jeff immediately tried to free her from her chains with the key he had found at the beginning of his test. As the key didn't fit the lock, he tried to open the padlock of the second door out of the room. However this attempt remained unsuccessful as well. A few moments later, he finally noticed a tape recorder on the floor in the corner of the room.

Jeff and Danica in the freezer room

Upon playing the tape, Jigsaw introduced Jeff to the woman. Just when he told him that she was in fact Danica Scott, the only witness of Dylan's death, Jeff finally recognized her. As she was chained up, she wouldn't have any chance to run away like she did three years ago. Jigsaw offered him the chance to take revenge on her by just letting her freeze to death, but also told him, that he could save her by obtaining the key to her chains, which hung from a wire behind several cooling pipes on the room's back wall. When the tape ended, two metal contraptions positioned to the right and to the left of Danica, began to spray cooling water on her naked body. Danica began to scream and only calmed down when the water was turned off again. Again, she begged Jeff to help her. However, he refused to do so and merely watched her as he was still filled with anger because she had fled the scene of his son's death years ago and thereby prevented his killer from getting his rightful punishment. At this moment, the water was turned on again for a few moments, again spraying Danica's body. When the water stopped once more, she apologized for her mistake and begged Jeff to look at her. Just when he did, the water was sprayed on her skin again, causing Jeff to finally take action. He quickly went to the back wall and tried to grab the key.

Jeff touches Danica's face

However, he stopped when he couldn't hear Danica screaming anymore. Upon returning to her, he saw that her body was almost entirely covered in a thin coat of ice. Hesitantly, he touched her face and suddenly backed away when the coat cracked under his fingers. Thinking that he still had a chance to save her, he tried one more time to grab the key behind the cooling pipes. This time, he was successful, but while doing so, his right cheek stuck to one of the pipes due to the intense coldness. Under great pain, Jeff finally pulled back and thereby tore off some of the skin from his cheek. With the key in his possession, he returned to Danica and tried to free her. However, the chain as well as Danica herself were already covered in ice. Realizing he couldn't save her anymore, he wiped his hand over her face as if he closed her eyes and then left the room by using the key on the second door.

Upon escaping the freezer room, Jeff took off bath robe, which was wet through due to the water from the shower contraptions. After doing so, he sat down on the floor and tried tried to realize what just had happened, when he suddenly noticed another small box on a barrel before him, similar to the box he had found after his initial awakening. In the box was another message which told him that "One bullet will end it all." On the back of the message, there was another snippet of the photo, showing Jeff's son, Dylan. Additionally, the box contained a single bullet. After he had picked up everything, he continued his way. (Saw III)

Jeff Denlon's Second Test[]

HaldenTrap

Judge Halden in the vat

Shortly afterwards, Jeff walked through another long hallway. While doing so, he saw a mechanical ventriloquist puppet lying on the floor next to a red tricycle. This scene closely resembled the death of his son. Feeling uncomfortable, Jeff calmly approached and carefully picked up the puppet. However, when he did so and took a look at it, the puppet began to maniacally laugh at him. Therefore, Jeff immediately dropped it and eventually saw the next door before him with the words "Time to let go" written on it. When he attempted to open it, it turned out to be quite hard as unknown to him, a contraption was attached to the other side of the door with a tightened wire that extended across the room to a control panel. However, Jeff finally managed to open it and stumbled into the room. Upon doing so, he saw how a metal pin connected to the end of the wire was pulled out of the panel. As he carefully went further into the room, the door suddenly slammed shut just like the one in the freezer room. Again, Jeff tried to open it but stopped when all of a sudden he heard the scared voice of a man screaming for help. As he followed the voice, Jeff climbed a metal stairway up to a catwalk above a large vat where he saw another audio recorder dangling from the ceiling. Upon grabbing it, he saw the man who was shackled to the bottom of the vat by a metal chain around his neck.

JeffSecondTest

Jeff is introduced to his second test

The audio tape introduced him to Halden, the presiding judge responsible for the mild prison sentence of Timothy Young. Again, Jigsaw gave Jeff two options. He could either let Judge Halden die or he could go down the stairs where a big furnace was located. Inside the furnace where all the memorabilia of his son which he had kept over the past three years. As the key to Halden's chain was hidden among Dylan's possessions, the only way to get it was by activating the incinerator, which would burn all the toys and photos until only the key was left. When the tape ended, a giant blender with multiple interlocking saws, which was connected with the vat via a chute, was activated. Just as Halden wondered about the loud sound of the saw blades, a conveyor-like contraption on the ceiling was set into motion. Seconds later, several rotten pig carcasses hanging from the conveyor were carried into the room and dropped over the saws. Thereby, they were hackled to a thick, grey, stinking pulp which was poured into the vat over the chute and dashed Judge Halden's body. Disgusted by the stench and the shocking eyesight, Jeff stepped back. Frightened and angered, Halden yelled at him that he couldn't let him die there. In return, Jeff furiously reminded him of Timothy Young and his mild sentence of merely six months in prison. In an attempt to convince Jeff to help him, Halden offered to discuss the case and told him that he could help him to get the sentence extended.

Jeff however furiously yelled at him as Timothy had already been released long ago. In a final desperate attempt, Halden told him that he had a son himself and asked Jeff if he really wanted to become a murderer as well. Therefore, Jeff turned away and climbed down the stairway, causing Halden to panic. When he stood in front of the incinerator, Jeff tried to open its door and got angrily kicked against the vat when it didn't work. He struggled with himself, intensively thinking whether he should burn his last memorabilia of his son. However, as time went by and he heard the screams and apologies of Halden, Jeff ultimately turned on the furnace, causing all the toys of his son to be burned forever. His eyes filled with tears, but eventually he saw the key dropping into the incinerator's ash container. As soon as the flames were turned off, Jeff grabbed the key, run up the stairs again and climbed down a ladder into the vat. Disgustedly, he unlocked the shackle around Halden's neck and pulled him up, only seconds before the last torrent of pulp splashed into the vat. (Saw III)

Jeff Denlon's Third Test[]

The Rack

Timothy Young in his trap

From then on, Jeff and Halden continued their way together and eventually reached the next door with the words "Here's your chance" written on it. Disgusted by the stench still clinging to him, Halden took of his tie and vomited on the floor, while Jeff found another small box standing on a barrel in front of the door. Inside the box was the next message saying "One step closer to your revenge." As before, a photo snippet was glued to the back of the message, this time showing Corbett. Besides this, there was an empty gun magazine. Remembering the bullet he had found after leaving the freezer room, Jeff immediately inserted it into the magazine, when Judge Halden condoled with him over the loss of his son. However, he also claimed that even a death sentence for Timothy wouldn't have eased his suffering and tried to convince him that vengeance would only make it worth. Nonetheless Jeff was eager to continue and kicked the door open, which caused the lights inside the next room to turn on. Aroused by the noise, a man strapped to another trap began to panic and screamed for help. As Jeff approached, he finally recognized him as Timothy Young. Timothy told him to do something, but Jeff remained calm and instead started the tape recorder hanging from a wire around Timothy's neck.

JeffTimothy

The tape left by Jigsaw told introduced him to Timothy, stating that he was a 27-year-old medical student who once had a normal life just like Jeff until the car accident three years earlier. Now Jeff was finally given the opportunity to take revenge on the murderer of his child. Jigsaw explained that the device to which Timothy was strapped would start to twist his limbs as soon as the game began. Again, he also gave Jeff the chance to forgive Timothy. To the right of him was an elongated glass box which contained a shotgun. Connected to its trigger by a wire, the key to the trap was hanging in front of the barrel and would cause it to fire a shot once the key was removed. As the tape ended, the entrance door of the room slammed shut and the large contraption began to slowly twist Timothy's right arm counter clockwise. While Halden immediately grabbed a metal pipe from the floor and unsuccessfully tried to smash the glass box, Jeff merely stood before Timothy and watched his suffering. However, to his own surprise he soon averted his gaze in disgust and had to literally force himself to watch. Even though he was seemingly angered that this confrontation with Timothy didn't satisfy him as he always imagined, he continued to watch. Shocked by this, Halden approached him and told him to do something, but Jeff angrily pushed him away. At this point, Timothy's arm was completely twisted and as he begged Jeff for mercy, the trap started to twist his other arm as well. Halden tried to stop the device by brute force and yelled at Jeff, claiming that he would be a murderer as well if he didn't help Timothy. To the latter's horror, Jeff casually responded that he might be a murderer and had desired to kill him everyday for the past three years. However, when Timothy's arm broke and Halden reminded him of his wife and daughter, Jeff came to his senses. As the trap began to twist Timothy's right leg, Jeff went to the box and carefully removed the key from the wire, while the trap continued its grisly work.

JeffHaldenTimothy

Jeff kneels before Timothy's corpse

He managed to get the key just when the device had finished twisting its victim's second leg. However, unnoticed by him, Halden accidentally came into the firing line and was shot in the head by the shotgun when Jeff let go of the wire. Initially shocked by Halden's death, Jeff ran to the trap as it began to twist Timothy's head. However when he couldn't find the lock, he dropped the key and mounted the contraption, screaming that it should stop as he forgave Timothy. However, Timothy's neck was broken nonetheless as his head was twisted backwards. Shocked by the gruesome eyesight, Jeff stepped back, put off his jacket and kneeled down before his corpse. (Saw III)

Lynn Denlon and Amanda Young's Game[]

AmandaLynnJohn

Lynn and Amanda discuss John's condition

Meanwhile, Lynn Denlon began her examination of John after receiving her instructions, when Amanda came in and told them that Jeff's game had begun. They got in an argument when Lynn told her that John had to be operated at the hospital as soon as possible to decompress his brain as it was presumably herniating. When Amanda insulted and threatened Lynn John told her not to do so as Lynn couldn't do what she had to do under such pressure. Seconds later he suffered an epileptic attack. Lynn immediately took action and ordered Amanda, who was shocked and paralyzed, to help her, which she eventually did. However, they didn't have the right medicaments to end the seizure and therefore, all they could do was to wait. After a few seconds, the attack was over and John stabilized again. Following this incident, she talked to Amanda, who had left the room in tears, and finally convinced her that he had to be operated. However, Amanda demanded her to perform the surgery at the meatpacking plant and asked her what she needed. Realizing that every attempt to convince her to take John to the hospital was pointless, Lynn told her that she would need anesthetics as well as a power drill, among other instruments. After that, Amanda left to get the necessary supplies.

SAW3 DAY18 024

Lynn holds the ax

When she was alone, Lynn walked around the hideout and was horrified by the various vicious devices John and Amanda had designed. Eventually, she came across a mannequin's head with a heavy metallic device on its head, which was in fact the Reverse Bear Trap which John had previously used to test Amanda before she became his apprentice. In a twinge of curiosity, she tried to touch it, but eventually hesitated. Seconds later, she saw a phone lying on the table, partly covered by a cloth. However, when she tried to grab it, the beartrap accidentally went off, destroyed the head and fell to the floor with a loud noise. Lynn stepped back and was scared witless when Amanda suddenly appeared behind her. Lynn tried to convince her once again that John had to be operated in a hospital. However Amanda ignored her advice and simply remarked how hard it must be for Lynn to concentrate while she was surrounded by so many things she could kill her with. To mock her she placed an ax in her hand and told her that if she wanted to kill her she should do it quietly to not alert John and make him rip off his heart rating monitor which would activate the collar. She also told her that it was her who built the collar and therefore knew exactly what it could do to her if she didn't follow the rules. As Lynn was increasingly frightened by her, Amanda took the ax back from her and asked her if she had everything she needed for the surgery. When Lynn responded that she couldn't save John's life with the instruments given to her, Amanda merely responded that she'd be surprised what tools could save a life before she took her old trap from the floor and put it back on the table.

Amanda then went to John to tell him that Lynn was going to perform the surgery on him now. Lynn struggled with her tears but ultimately calmed down, knowing that her only chance to survive was to follow John's rules. Meanwhile, Amanda sat at John's bed and told him about Jeff Denlon's progress in his game after he had just finished his first test in the freezer room, where he wasn't able to save Danica Scott. When she told John that Lynn was ready to perform the surgery on him he encouraged Amanda to stay strong and told her about the letter left for her in her desk, but didn't tell her that it was from Hoffman.

LynnWithPowerSaw

Lynn performs the surgery on John

When Amanda left John's room again and returned to the surveillance monitors, Lynn prepared everything for the surgery. Just when she shaved John's head, Amanda came back, telling them that Jeff had finished his second test and had been able to save the other test subject involved, Judge Halden. Therefore, John was surprised by his fast progress. After that, Lynn explained the procedure of the operation to him, which was going to ease his headaches and would enhance his motor faculties, before she injected him with a local anesthetic. Due to the complexity of the surgery Lynn had no choice but to do it while John was conscious. Lynn then partly cut off a part of his scalp in order to lay open the skull. After disinfecting the wound with alcohol, the hardest part of the surgery began. With the power drill, she bored four small holes in his skull. Afterwards, she used an electric circular saw to cut through the skullcap and finally removed a piece of it with a small retractor to take the pressure from head. After his vital functions stabilized, Lynn told him to raise his hand and flex his fingers. However, he suddenly suffered a breakdown, causing Amanda to burst into tears out of fear. While his heart-rate declined, he had hallucinations about Jill Tuck. Lynn was just barely able to save him. Due to his delirious state, John confused her with Jill and told her he loved her, causing Amanda to be jealous of the attention that John gave to her.

Amanda's emotional breakdown

Distressed by the knowledge of John's impending death and her jealousy, Amanda went to her bed and took out a small metal box with medical supplies such as bandages and compresses. Remembering all the things she had done for John, she began to cut her inner thigh with a knife which helped her to deal with the stress of the situation. Once she had managed to calm down she bound her wound up and returned to John who was sleeping as he had to recover from the surgery as well as his breakdown, while Lynn walked around and took a look at the various paintings and drawings on the walls. When Amanda hugged John tightly, Lynn told her that he couldn't hear her and probably didn't even know she was there. This made Amanda even angrier and ultimately caused her to attack Lynn and grab her by her throat. As she was about to pull her gun, John, who had waken up by the noise, intervened and told her to put the weapon away. After some hesitation, she did as he told her and was harshly ordered to leave. When they were alone, John apologized for her behavior, stating that while she was close to him, her strong emotions were her greatest weakness.

LynnEscape

As time went by, he talked to Lynn about her family and advised her to appreciate them. He also talked about her depressions, her neglect of her daughter, and her affairs with other men. Angered by this, Lynn told him that her marriage had survived more suffering than someone like him could possibly ever imagine. However, John merely responded that she didn't know what true suffering meant yet. Lynn then begged him to let her go, when moments later, Amanda reentered the room and saw how he hold Lynn's hand. John told her he was fine and she could go away. However she refused to do so until John asked Lynn to leave the room so he could speak with Amanda alone. As Lynn left the room, she embraced her opportunity for an attempt to flee. She tried to open the lock of the exit door with her scalpel. This turned out to be unsuccessful. However, seconds later, she found a screwdriver and was therefore able to finally open the door. As she went on, she saw a telephone. However, it was on the other side of a chain-link fence. Therefore, she eventually went back, closed the door and put the screwdriver back. Moments later, Amanda returned from John's room and calmly approached her, stating that John needed her. However she got suspicious by Lynn's behavior and examined the door. When she asked her why it was open, Lynn embraced the opportunity and attacked her with her scalpel, causing the two of them to engage in a fight. After a brief struggle, Lynn finally managed to gain the upper hand and threatened to kill Amanda. However the latter was rarely impressed by her threats and told her that she would never get the key to the collar if she killed her. Lynn ripped off a key which was hanging on a chain around Amanda's neck. Unfortunately she quickly realized the key wasn't meant for the collar. When Amanda mockingly laughed at her she left angrily and went back to John, leaving Amanda behind. Upon her return, she begged John again to let her go, reminding him that she had saved his life. John however remarked that in the end it might not have been his life that she had saved and claimed that she would be grateful one day if she survived this experience. During their conversation, he asked her to tell him about her daughter and her son, asking her why she spent so much time on grieving about him while she had a wonderful family that needed her. (Saw III)

AmandaLetter

Amanda reads Hoffman's letter

Meanwhile, Amanda eventually lost her composure and started to cry. She went to her surveillance room and took out the letter from her desk which John had told her about. When she realized that the letter was actually from Mark Hoffman, who blackmailed her with his knowledge of her role in Gideon's death, she was further distressed and her mental state worsened even more. To take revenge on Hoffman she went to a room somewhere in the building in which Corbett Denlon, the daughter of Lynn and Jeff Denlon, had been held hostage and told her that she mustn't trust the one who would save her. As she already knew that Hoffman would be the one to free Corbett once the game was over, Amanda hoped that the girl would tell the cops about her warning and therefore give them a clue about Hoffman's identity as Jigsaw's apprentice. At the same time as the other games took place, Detective Eric Matthews woke up in his trap. At this moment, several radiant heaters placed around him turned on and began to melt the ice. As he recognized Hoffman, the latter pretended to be surprised to see him. At the same time, Daniel Rigg was attacked and subdued in his apartment. When he woke up, he realized that he had to play one of Jigsaw's games in order to overcome his obsession with saving everyone around him. At certain points in his game, he was provided with live footage coming from the room that Eric and Hoffman were trapped in.

Art arrives at the plant

Shortly after the beginning of the game, Art Blank, John's former lawyer, friend and partner, entered the room and pulled a lever next to the door which activated a mechanism above Eric Matthew's head. Mark Hoffman angrily yelled at him and demanded him to let them go. However Art ignored them and instead sat down in front of the surveillance monitors in order to observe Jigsaw's games. At some point after the beginning of Rigg's series of tests, Eric told Art to fuck himself and attempted to commit suicide. Therefore he tried to hang himself with the chain noose around his neck by jumping off the ice block. However Art saved him and placed him back on the block. When he revealed to him that Hoffman would be electrocuted if Eric left the block, Hoffman begged Eric to listen to him. Eric insulted the man but stayed on the block when he went back to the monitors.

Eric and Hoffman

However as the game progressed, Eric begged Art to shoot him as he didn't want to play the game any longer. Therefore Hoffman angrily yelled at him and told him to be quiet. Later on Eric pretended to be unconscious. When Hoffman told Art to take a look at him, Art became worried and tried to wake Eric up. Eric then attacked him and therefore fell off the ice block again. While struggling with him, Art forced him back on the block and told him that he wasn't the one that Eric should worry about. Furthermore he told them that all of them were going to be free if Rigg passed his test, revealing that he was merely another victim on his own. Following the instructions Jigsaw provided for him some time earlier, Art gave Eric a gun and a bullet and told him that he had the choice if he wanted to live or to die.

Art reveals his trap

At some point however Art started to become nervous when he saw the mechanism above Eric's head. This mechanism was connected to two large ice blocks attached to mechanical arms suspended from the ceiling. When he saw the chain which connected the mechanism with the door of the room, Art realized that the ice blocks would swing down and therefore crush Eric's head if the door was opened before a 90-minute timer went off. Therefore they had to prevent Rigg, who was on his way to the plant already, from entering the room before the clock expired. As the timer was ticking down, Art, Hoffman and Eric started to panic. Eric yelled at Art and demanded him to tell them who was coming. However Art ignored them and just kept his eye on the surveillance monitors. When he took off his jacket he revealed one of Jigsaw's deadly contraptions, which was attached to his back and would crush his spine if he didn't follow Jigsaw's rules. Furthermore he took out a button and told the detectives that it would free them once the time went off. (Saw IV)

Culmination[]

As all the games taking place at the Gideon building slowly reached their end, it became obvious that they were all in some way connected. At this time, Daniel Rigg entered the building through the delivery entrance and was followed by Special Agent Peter Strahm shortly afterwards, after the latter had called for reinforcements. As Rigg went through the hallways, he found a box containing a message, which told him to be patient, as time was on his side, and to remember who he was saving. As he continued his way through the storage depot, he found another box, which was empty. Unbeknownst to him, this was the first box found by Jeff after his escape from the wooden crate. Upon going further, he came to a hallway with the words "See As I See", "Feel What I Feel", "Save As I Save" and "Judge As I Judge" written all over the walls. Additionally, he found the ID cards of Eric and Hoffman lying on a barrel, along with another message that asked him if he had learned how to truly save a life. (Saw IV)

Meanwhile, Jeff Denlon had calmed down after witnessing Timothy and Halden's death, and continued his way through the meatpacking plant. On his way, he armed himself with a large meat hook and due to the noises he made, he attracted the attention of Strahm, who was in a hallway nearby and immediately followed the sounds. Eventually, Jeff reached a chain-link fence with a door, which was unfortunately locked. However, Jeff managed to open it when he remembered the key he had found in the first box at the beginning of his game. Upon passing the door, he found another box with a message which told him that this was his "Last chance". Glued the back of the message was the final snippet of the photo, which showed Lynn this time around. Furthermore, the box contained a gun. Therefore, Jeff dropped the meat hook and inserted the previously found magazine with the single bullet in the gun. (Saw III, IV)

Amanda holds Lynn at gunpoint

At the same time, Amanda returned from Corbett's cell and told John that Jeff had finished his third test. Therefore, John congratulated Lynn and told her that she was now free to go. However, Amanda refused to unlock her collar as Jeff hadn't finished his trial yet. John repeatedly told her to let Lynn go and reminded her of the rules, but Amanda eventually pulled her gun and aimed it at Lynn, angrily stating that she doesn't deserve to live. Frightened by her threats, Lynn burst into tears and told her that Amanda had promised to let her go. When John told Lynn to put down the gun, claiming that it was Lynn who held her life in her hands, Amanda angrily yelled at him for giving Lynn the control over her. During their dispute, John asked her if this was how she had felt about her other test subjects, specifically Detective Eric Matthews, the cop who had innocently framed her by faking the evidence in her case, and thereby revealed that he knew that John had manipulated her traps, giving her victims no chance to survive even if they managed to accomplish their tasks. John told her that he had forgiven her her past mistakes and tried to convince her to let Lynn go, as it would harm all of them otherwise. Amanda however still refused to do so, stating that John was just a murderer in her eyes just like her and that she didn't believe that anyone would ever change due to his games. When he told her that he had always just tried to help her, Amanda yelled at him to help her now as she needed him and asked her why Lynn was so important to him. He however claimed that she wasn't important to him but to her, which Amanda denied. He then tried to persuade her one last time to lower her weapon, when all of the sudden, Jeff appeared before the door of the room. As he and Lynn noticed each other, she went to him but was shot by Amanda in the back. Angered by this, Jeff entered the room and shot Amanda in the throat with a gun he had found earlier, before carefully deposing his wounded wife on the floor. While he was comforting Lynn, who was barely conscious, John revealed to Amanda that he had tested her just like Lynn and told her that his initial instructions for Lynn, according to which she had to learn how to save a life, were meant for her as well. Realizing that she had been fooled by her mentor, Amanda eventually succumbed to her wound and died on the floor in front of John's eyes who ended her game with the words "Game Over."

Jeff prepares himself to kill John

After Amanda had died, Jeff aimed his gun at John. The latter berated him for not having learned anything from his test, stating that his thirst for vengeance would only harm his loved ones. Furthermore, he told him that he couldn't kill him. Despite this, Jeff eventually pulled the trigger, but didn't have any bullets left. John then told him that Lynn was about to die. When Jeff comforted her and promised to bring her home, she uttered that she loved him. John then warned him that she would die if he tried to bring her away and offered to call an ambulance. Jeff eventually agreed and asked John what he wanted in exchange for his help. John demanded one final test from him to see if he had overcome his obsession with revenge. Jeff could either kill him with the tools lying on a table in the room, or he could forgive John for all the pain he had caused him and his wife, proving that he had learned from his previous tests. Jeff got up, despite Lynn begging him to stay by her side, and grabbed a circular saw from the table. He then approached John and lay his hand on his chest, stating to forgive him. However, only seconds later he raised the saw and despite Lynn desperately yelling at him to stop, he eventually slashed John's throat, while claiming again that he had forgiven him. Seconds later, a collar around Lynn's neck, which was connected with John's heart rate monitor, was activated and the room's door slammed shut.

With the last of his strength, John took out and started a tape recorder, which explained to Jeff that John had been his final test of forgiveness. Furthermore, he finally explained him what he meant when he told him that Jeff couldn't kill him, stating that he had also abducted his and Lynn's daughter, Corbett, and was the only person who knew about her whereabouts. If Jeff wanted to see her again, he had to play another game. When the message ended, John succumbed to his wounds, thereby activating Lynn's collar, which killed her by blowing off her head as soon as he flatlined. Angered and shocked by Lynn's death and the abduction of Corbett, Jeff furiously started to scream. As his own gun was empty, he grabbed the gun of the deceased Amanda Young and looked for a way out. (Saw III)

Jeff's death

Jeff is shot by Agent Strahm

Meanwhile, Strahm, who had heard the gunshots, the explosion of Lynn's collar and the sound of the electric saw, reached the big workshop as well and approached the door. He carefully examined it and looked for any hidden traps connected to the door. As he didn't find anything dangerous, he attempted to open the door, albeit unsuccessfully. However, he had a key in his pocket which had been sent to him earlier, supposedly by his police contact Detective Allison Kerry, along with a message saying "Open the door and you will find me." With the key, he was finally able to open the door and therefore entered the room. Upon doing so, he found Jeff and told him to show him his hands. Jeff however aimed the gun at him and demanded to tell him where his daughter was, causing Strahm to shoot him in self-defense.

Rigg Hoffman

Rigg learns the truth about Hoffman

At the same time, Rigg continued his way through the plant, and after a few minutes, he finally reached the room in which Eric and Hoffman were trapped. However, Eric desperately yelled at him not to open the door. Ignoring his warning, Rigg burst through the door with only one second left on the clock, and was shot in the chest by Eric in the process, as a final attempt to keep him from entering. When he opened the door, Art Blank approached Rigg, who then shot him in the chest. Moments later, Eric's head was smashed by two large ice blocks swinging down from the ceiling, causing Rigg to fall to the floor, screaming in grief and agony. He angrily yelled at Art Blank, as he thought him to be Jigsaw's accomplice, but Art was merely another victim, who had been tasked with supervising the detectives for the duration of Rigg's game. Art tried to explain that he was tested by Jigsaw, and went to reach for his bag, causing Rigg, who thought that Art was grabbing a weapon, to shoot him in the head. However, it turned out that there was no weapon, and Art was actually attempting to grab an audio tape. Upon listening to the recording, Rigg finally realized that his test wasn't to save Eric, but to let Eric save himself. Moments later, Hoffman freed himself from his trap and calmly approached Rigg, thus bringing Rigg to the realization that Hoffman was Jigsaw's accomplice. However, due to his gunshot wound, Rigg collapsed to the floor as Hoffman escaped. He turned around one last time and ended Rigg's game with the words "Game Over" before he disappeared and left Rigg for dead. Shortly thereafter, Rigg succumbed to his gunshot wound. (Saw IV)

Peter Strahm's Test[]

Hoffman attacks Peter Strahm

After leaving Rigg behind, Hoffman returned to John's bedroom where he found Agent Strahm as well as the corpses of John, Amanda, Jeff and Lynn Denlon. Before Strahm could notice him, he closed and locked the door and turned off the lights inside the room. Moments later, Strahm attempted to open the door. However this attempt remained a failure. Therefore he tried to call the police, but this attempt failed as well as he had no signal. While looking for another way out, he eventually noticed the outlines of the hidden door as they glowed green due to a special fluorescent color. Upon opening it, he discovered a hallway and a tape recorder hanging from the ceiling. The tape, recorded by John Kramer, told him to stay where he was until the police arrived. However, Strahm refused to do so, and entered the secret hallway behind the door, leaving the dead bodies behind him. Eventually, he reached a room at the end of the hallway. However, only moments after he went in, he was attacked by a disguised Hoffman, who had been waiting for him and injected him with an anesthetic. Moments later, Strahm passed out. Afterwards, Hoffman put him in another trap in the same room, which was designed to kill him by drowning him without giving him any chance to survive. Hoffman then took everything that Strahm had in his pockets and placed it on a barrel before him. However, upon doing so, he forgot to remove a single pen from his pockets. Not noticing his mistake, Hoffman left the room, expecting Strahm to die shortly afterwards. (Saw IV, V)

Headboxtrap

Strahm in the Water Cube

When Strahm woke up again, he immediately panicked when he realized that his head was trapped in a glass cube. Frightened by the situation, he screamed for help and tried to free himself. While looking around, he noticed two tubes inserted through the top of the cube, which were connected to two water tanks. Moments later, after searching his pockets for anything useful, he saw all of his possessions on a barrel before him. Therefore, he tried to escape the cube by brute force, when suddenly, the cube began to fill with water. Realizing the severity of the situation, Strahm further panicked as the water level increased quickly. After a matter of seconds, the cube was filled entirely. However, at this moment, Strahm finally found his pen in his pocket. In a last desperate attempt to survive, he rammed the pen in his throat, removed the ball pen refill and thereby successfully performed a tracheotomy on himself which enabled him to breath. (Saw V)

Police Raid[]

The Swat team at Gideon Meatpacking Plant

Meanwhile, Hoffman got rid of his disguise and went to the cell where Corbett Denlon was still locked up. Pretending to be her savior, he took the little girl with him. When they finally reached the exit and left the building, they were already expected by the police, who had been called to the plant by Strahm. While the paramedics took care of Corbett, Hoffman was greeted by Detective Fisk who asked him about the whereabouts of Daniel Rigg. Hoffman told him that Rigg had died while trying to help and also claimed that there were no other survivors. Therefore, he was unpleasantly surprised when another team of paramedics suddenly came out of the building with Strahm, who lay on a gurney, severely injured but nonetheless alive. (Saw V)

As the police secured and searched the entire building, they discovered the many corpses of John Kramer's victims. All of them, as well as the bodies of John himself and Amanda Young, were sent to the morgue for their examination by Dr. Adam Heffner, while the traps and other evidence, such as Hoffman's blackmailing letter to Amanda, were taken to the police department's evidence room. (Saw IV, VI, 3D)

Further Investigation[]

StrahmSickRoom

Strahm returns to the plant

Following the events at the Gideon plant, Strahm eventually discovered that Detective Hoffman was John Kramer's remaining accomplice. In an attempt to reconstruct his development as John Kramer's apprentice and eventual successor, Strahm went back to the room at the Gideon Meatpacking Plant where John had been killed. The circumstance that nobody but Hoffman and he himself survived the events at the plant as well as the fact that he wasn't supposed to escape from his own trap, finally led him to the conclusion that Hoffman had planned long before that no one who could endanger his identity would survive. Furious and angry, Strahm swore to himself that he would stop him and finally put an end to the games. (Saw V)

Trivia[]

  • In a conversation with Peter Strahm, Dan Erickson mentioned there were "over a dozen" dead bodies recovered from the plant. However, only ten people died at the plant. Most likely, Erickson was merely exaggerating. (Saw V)
  • The SAW™ Chapter, a DLC for the video game Dead by Daylight, takes place at the Gideon Meatpacking Plant, although there are several differences regarding the layout.
