Carvin Lawrence Winans (born March 5, 1958) is an American actor and singer best known for his musical performances as part of the Winans Family.

He played Officer Paul in Spiral.

Early Life[]

Carvin Winans was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 5, 1958, to David and Delores Winans as the third of ten children. He started singing at the age of four, following in his parents' footsteps. He married Chérie Winans in 2004, and they have six children: Carvin Jr., Juan, Deborah Joy, Ian, Shanniah, and Laylah.

Career[]

Winans made his musical debut in 1981 as part of the world-renowned Winans Family. He first debuted with his brothers on Light Records with the release of "Introducing The Winans," which was nominated for a Grammy and followed by the release of "Long-time Coming," which also received a Grammy nomination.

In 1985, Winans was recognized in the industry when he won a Grammy Award for the album Tomorrow, for which he wrote the title track. He and his brothers signed with Quincy Jones at Qwest Records in 1986, where they recorded six albums, four of which were Grammy Award winners. Throughout his career, Winans has been nominated for a Grammy 11 times, ultimately winning five Grammys.

Along with the Grammys, he received several NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards, Dove Awards, and Stellar Awards as a member of the Winans Family. He has written songs for Regina Belle, Whitney Houston, Peabo Bryson, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

Winans sang background vocals on "Man in the Mirror," produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. He sang with Kenny Loggins on "Imaginary Life" and Michael McDonald on "Love has no color."

Furthermore, he performed on The Winans Real Meaning of Christmas show, which aired in 1992 and 1993. In 2000, he was the host and executive producer of All Access with Carvin Winans. The show aired for two seasons on WDIV TV and featured numerous celebrity guests, including Debbie Allen, Gladys Knight, Kirk Franklin, and Brian McKnight.

In 2002, Winans performed on a sold-out world tour with his family in front of millions of fans, which closed out in Detroit at the Fox Theatre.

In October 2007, he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, alongside his brothers. On June 18, 2008, he received the President's Merit Award from the Recording Academy in recognition of his extraordinary gifts as a passionate singer, performer, expressive communicator, and pioneer of contemporary gospel music.

After the tragic loss of his beloved friend, Whitney Houston, Winans sang "Tomorrow" at her funeral in February 2012, which became the #1 Inspirational Song on iTunes.

In August 2013, he formed a new group called 3 Winans Brothers with his brothers Marvin and Bebe. They released their first single, "If God Be for Us," which debuted at the 50th Anniversary March in Washington, commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King in front of millions of viewers. The 3 Winans Brothers' album was released in 2014 to critical acclaim. Following the release, they received an NAACP Award.

Trivia[]

  • On the audio commentary track of Spiral, producer Mark Burg stated that Carvin Winans' line in the film was rewritten because the latter did not want to curse on-screen.
